ABOUT US

United Cricket Club established in 1976, is an off-shoot of its founder members’ quest for non-racialism in South African Sport and in the South African community at large. It was a merger between old renowned and reputable clubs in the township, namely Fort Beaufort and New Brighton Cricket Clubs.

This exercise was motivated by a strong belief in the values now entrenched in the Constitution of South Africa namely, inter alia, human dignity, equality, human rights and freedom, non-racialism and non-sexism.

In pursuit of the objectives above, the two clubs together with others became part of the Eastern Province Cricket Association (EPCA) and through the latter members of the South African Cricket Board (SACB) as well as the South African Council of Sport (SACOS) and later the National Sports Council.

The amalgamation was later strengthen by the merger with Wide Awake Cricket Club, a move led by seasoned cricketers and freedom fighters Thomas Mavata and Nkululeko Tundube.

United Cricket Club produced eminent players and administrators amongst whom, just to name a few, were Silas Nkanunu, Dumile Qeqe, Winky Ximiya, Raymond Mali, Edwin Ncula, Wilfred Khovu, Skhumbuzo Oliphant, Judge Ronnie Pillay, Johnny Makgato, Danny Jordaan, Pilot Nthako (nee’ Mashicila), Khaya Majola, Thoba Williams, Thembsile Bleki, Tsepo Kadi, Hambile Njenje, Brian Nonganga, Thomas Mavata, Wilber Fischer, Gerald Majola, Allister Coetzee, Douglas Maku, Archie Mali and many more.

Raymond Mali graduated to head the highest cricket office globally as the President of the International Cricket Council (ICC).

United Cricket Club was one of the top clubs in the Eastern Province Cricket Association winning numerous trophies as Champions and producing a lot of players for the Province hence they were awarded a Premier League status in the first year of unity of cricket in 1992.

During this period the Majola brothers, Khaya and Mongezi (Gerald) were selected to represent the South African Cricket Board (SACB) and South African Council of Sport (SACOS) as all-rounder (left arm spinner & left middle order batsman) and top order right hand batsman respectively.

Numerous other players included in the Eastern Province Team either than the 2 brothers were: Thoba Williams, Tsepo Kadi, Danny Jordaan, Andrew Jordaan, Sydney Kruger, Wilber Fischer, Archie Mali, Thembile Pono, Thozi Majola, Phaki Ximiya, Thembsile Bleki and Mandisi Mali.

CURRENT STATUS

United, like many other clubs from the previously disadvantaged backgrounds, struggled to adjust when facing affluent opposition in the period after unity and had to be bolstered by players from the established institution (EPCU) to be competitive. Players like Phillip Amm, Mark Rushmere, Louis Koen and Adriaan Birrel are but a few who could be mentioned in this lot.

United was competitive in the first decade of Unity due to the inclusion of these players joining stalwards, Mandisi Mali and Allister Coetzee as well a young crop of talented juniors like Lulama Masikazana, Kenneth Mahuwa, Derrick Sontundu, just to name a few, who were mentored by Adriaan Birrel.

When this mentoring and support programme came to a halt, the club battled to make ends meet till they were relegated in the 2012/13 season to participate in the Promotion League.

The club regrouped under a new leadership to prepare for the future ahead. A new executive led by Julius Mpumelelo Majola was appointed with a sole objective of being the model club in the country and compete with the best in the World.

Since the establishment of this new regime the club has grown in leaps and bounds administratively, in membership and playing strength.

The club was promoted back to the Premier League in the 2015/16 season after an unbeaten run of 15 games in the Promotion League.

In that first season we ended 5th out 14 teams in the Premier League log.

Now that we had established the requirements to compete with the best in the Province, we recruited Grant Morgan to instill a culture of Champions within our enthusiastic and young players and create coaching and development structures that will sustain the club at this level. He acquitted himself in this job with aplomb until he was recruited by the Dolphins Franchise to head their coaching department.

It was at this stage, we decided to approach Jendamark Automation Proprietary Limited (Jendamark) to assist us to obtain our primary objective of becoming the model club of the modern era with all the challenges attributed to such desire.

IN CLOSING

We live in the most exciting era of sport development. A time when full contact sport no longer holds centre stage. It is a passage of time when the art of sport is appreciated over the physicality of competition. Today, latent skills and blossoming talent has a place amongst our youth and the generations to come. It is now the subtle brilliance of deftness, the art of touch, mastery of stroke and pure strategic guile that has turned cricket into the future of sport.

Today cricket is the stage for mental agility and peak physical condition. It is purity of both mind and spirit that produces champions.
